Texas man accused of illegally firing gun

A 22-year-old man has been detained by police after he allegedly fired multiple shots from his home in Texarkana. Police were summoned to the man's home after neighbors complained that he had been firing shots with a handgun from his porch. Police officers arrived at approximately 9:30 p.m. on the evening of Aug. 21 and reportedly saw the man fire 13 shots from the porch. The man's home is located in the 300 block of Blanton Street.

After allegedly observing the man fire over a dozen shots, police attempted to make contact with him. Officers approached the man but were unable to make contact initially as he returned to his home and refused to come out or open his door. After a standoff, police finally were able to persuade the man to leave his home, at which point he was detained and charged with discharging a firearm within the city limits.

The man detained in this case may wish to hire a criminal defense lawyer to mount a defense in court. A lawyer in a case similar to this one might argue that due to the darkness police would not be able to positively identify the individual that they detained as the individual firing the shots from the porch, especially if others were present inside of the home.

If the defense attorney felt that an acquittal would be unlikely at trial, he or she might instead attempt to arrange for a plea deal with the prosecution. A plea bargain might allow the defendant to plead guilty to a lesser charge or to face lesser consequences as the result of conviction.
