New Texas Laws Allowing Limited Medical Marijuana Use

While it seems unlikely that Texas will legalize recreational use of marijuana any time soon, a new law is opening the door for the use of medical marijuana.

The Compassionate Use Program will allow the state to grant licenses to specific dispensaries that can cultivate and sell low-THC cannabis products, including cannabis oil. At this time, these products can only be prescribed to individuals suffering intractable epilepsy. There is no age limit on the patients, but they must be prescribed the cannabis products by a doctor or physician who has been specifically licensed by the state to prescribe these products.

Individuals who are allowed to purchase the products must be permanent residents in the state of Texas. The law does not allow these individuals to grow cannabis themselves or give it to others.

You need to be aware that you can still face serious legal issues for marijuana use in Texas:

This new law does not change the strict stand that Texas takes against marijuana possession, use and distribution. If you are caught with pot, you could face anything from a misdemeanor to a felony carrying serious prison time. If you are caught with marijuana, you need to take the situation seriously and seek the best possible legal help to protect your rights and your future.

Our attorneys are prepared to defend you against the full brunt of sentencing and achieve the best possible outcome in your case.
