How to help your college age child after a DUI arrest

When you send your children off to college, you constantly worry that they will make a mistake that can drastically alter their life. While you hope for the best, you never know what the future could bring.

There are many crimes with more serious consequences than driving under the influence of alcohol. Even so, this is a crime that continually gets college students in hot water with the law.

From where you sit, your child's future may be in jeopardy. For example, a DUI conviction could lead to a suspension from school. Along with this, it could make it difficult for your child to follow his or her chosen career path, such as if they want to become an educator, coach, or law enforcement officer.

With all this in mind, there are many steps you can take to help your child. You can't go back in time and change the fact that your child was arrested. What you can do, however, is help him or her make all the right decisions with respect to the case. This starts with knowing the many types of DUI defense strategies:

  1. Improper stop. Does your child have reason to believe that the officer did not have probable cause for making the initial traffic stop? If so, this can be the best defense strategy to employ.
  2. Administration of a field sobriety test. Not all officers follow proper protocol when administering a field sobriety test. Subsequently, this could lead to inaccurate results.
  3. Accuracy of the breathalyzer test. Not only does the officer need to administer the breathalyzer in the appropriate manner, but there must not be any factors that could alter the results. This could include things such as indigestion or vomiting.

These are not the only DUI defense strategies to consider, but they are among the most common. Over the years, these strategies have helped many college students, among others, avoid a conviction.

As a parent, you know your child needs help during this difficult time. By learning more about DUI defense strategies, by finding the right legal help, it won't be long before you and your child are feeling better about what the future will bring.
